Chazy Neil J. Carey, 54, of Lake Shore Road, Chazy passed away unexpectedly on Monday, March 30, 2009 at his lake home surrounded by his family. He was born in Lake Placid February 22, 1955, the son of Sally F. Carey (Frenette) of Plattsburgh and the late John Douglas Carey. He was a graduate of St. John's Central High School and a 1976 graduate of Paul Smith's College with life-long love of the outdoors. On October 16, 1976 he married Kathleen (Kelly) as they made their first home in the Lake Placid area where Neil completed lay-out work for the 1976 Olympic ski jumps and the speed skating oval. In 1979 they moved to Denver, Colorado where Neil continued to pursue his land surveying career and learnd all that the Rockies had to offer. As Neil's career progressed he completed work in California, Wyoming and Utah. Returning to the East Coast, Neil with his wife and two sons moved to Westerly, RI to be closer to family and pursue his life passion of fishing. In 1990, the family returned home to Plattsburgh, where Neil started Carey Surveying Company. Here he had the opportunity to share his work with the wonderful community and friends where he grew up. Neil loved life and especially loved his family and friends. He was happiest when he was at his home surrounded by the people he loved on the lake that he loved. Neil obtained his Guide license for hunting and fishing in 2004, his Captain's license in 2008 in Alabama and joined the local Coast Guard Auxiliary where he continued to pursue on going certifications. He was a member of the professional Land Surveyors Association, a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and during the summer he frequently attended church by boat. He enjoyed yearly travel to areas of the world that offered sport, fishing adventures and newly found friends, with Tobago being his favorite destination. Fishing stories frequented conversations, especially with his first mate, his most loved granddaughter, Mikaela. Neil is survived by his wife and best friend of 32 years, Kathleen. Their love for each other was unmatched as they explored life and love and laughter. His oldest son Ryan Carey and his fiancée Amy Murray, whom in Neil's heart was his daughter, granddaughter, Mikaela Carey, and youngest son Michael Carey. Through his quiet strength and unending patience he taught his two sons the importance of serenity and the simple pleasure of life. His mother, Mrs. Sally Carey, of Plattsburgh, his mother-in-law Mrs. Ethel Brown of Plattsburgh, two brothers John Douglas (JD) Carey, and wife Sue of Plattsburgh, Joe Carey of Saratoga Springs, three sisters, Colleen Sullivan and husband Greg of Wappingers Falls, Mary Pat Beaulac and husband Mark of Wynantskill, Sally Ann Miranda and husband Steve of East Greenwich, RI. Two sisters-in-law Terri DuBray of Plattsburgh and Karen Kelly of Peru, one brother-in-law, Wayne Kelly of Plattsburgh, and 17 nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, April 2, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-8:30 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh.
