It is with a heavy heart we announce that on April 13, 2021 Retired, SMsgt Norman Q Smith passed away peacefully in his Plattsburgh home surrounded by his loved ones.
Born September 30, 1942 to Raymond Alfus Smith and Helen Ruby Smith (Cole) in Canisteo NY.
He was a graduate of Wellsville Senior high school Class of 64'. In 1965, Norman Married his high school sweetheart Gloria L Osgood and enlisted in The United States Air Force.
He was stationed at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Loring Air Force base, Maine as well as parts of Asia during the Vietnam conflict, Finally, arriving at Plattsburgh Air Force base (PAFB) in 1970 as an aircraft mechanic (OMS), he was transferred into Quality Control/Quality Assurance and finally retired as the PAFB Wing safety NCO in 1991.
He served his country with honor, and dedication. Norman was not known to brag about his military career or accomplishments. He simply said he made sure the planes went up, did what they were supposed to do and at the end of the day the pilots and crew went home to their families.
While he had an accomplished military career, those who knew him well, remember him best, as “Norm”, with a fishing pole in one hand and a cold beer in the other, somewhere out on the lakes and rivers of upstate NY that he loved.
Norman is survived by his wife of 55 years Gloria L Smith (Osgood). Son Norman E Smith and his wife Andrea of SC. Son Patrick I Smith and his partner Cheryl Vlahos of NY, Son Douglass M Smith and his wife Anna of NY. As well as 6 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and a vast extended family.
He will always be remembered as a dedicated military veteran, loving husband and father, caring and comical grandfather/ great grandfather and a true friend.
Norman lived his life with a simple motto. "Life is meant to be lived, death is inevitable, and all you can do is be your best with the time you have."
At his request, no services will be held. He only asked that you remember him for the man he was and know that he felt blessed to have known you all.
He will be missed!
