Patricia L Garrow

d. July 25, 2012

Morrisonville Mrs. Patricia L. Garrow, 81, of Jan Street in Morrisonville, passed away Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at her home with family by her side and under the care of Hospice of the North Country. She was born in Schenectady, N.Y. on August 20, 1930, the daughter of the late Guy and Harriette (Baker) Lyon. Patricia graduated from Burnt Hills High School and earned a B.S. in Education at Plattsburgh State University, where she excelled both as a student and athlete. She met her husband Robert while attending college, married, and had three children. She did not start her teaching career immediately, waiting until her children had reached the age for attending school. After substituting in a number of area schools, she chose to attend Columbia University where she earned certification as a Teacher of the Blind and Legally Blind becoming proficient in typing and reading braille. This led to a lifetime of working as an itinerant teacher with the Clinton,Essex, Warren and Washington BOCES, teaching blind and legally blind students throughout Clinton and Essex Counties. She had an extreme love and compassion for her students. She not only taught them, but was always concerned with their well-being which continued far after they had left her classroom. To the very late stages of her life, she was almost assured of a frequent communication from one of her former students. After retirement, she continued to work with individual school districts requesting her services for working with students. Patricia had a great love for her family, maintaining a weekly contact with them, as well as her grandchildren. She could also be found when her children and grandchildren were involved in school or other life activities. She was an avid reader and crossword puzzle enthusiast, completing at least two puzzles per day. She also served her community as a Cub Scout Leader, public housing committee (Town of Plattsburgh) and school committees (Saranac School District). Her family includes her husband of 62 years, Robert M. Garrow, her son Mark and wife Gail, two grandchildren, Matthew and Jacob, and a great grandson Gavin, her daughter Wendy and husband Brian and two grandchildren Erin and Sean, her son Guy and partner Jennifer, daughter Kathleen and husband James and grandchildren Adam and Megan, a sister; Shirley Ettinger, and several nieces and nephews. In accordance with Patricia's wishes, there will be no calling hours. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be offered to Hospice of the North Country or the Elmore S.P.C.A. Arrangements are entrusted to Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St., Plattsburgh 561-3980. Online condolences and memorial candles may be offered at www.brownfuneralhomeinc.com.
