Phoebe A Sturm

Faculty member and inaugural coach of Cardinal Women's Basketball, Phoebe Sturm's positive impact on the growth and development of athletics at SUNY Plattsburgh spans decades, beginning when she was hired to teach physical education on campus in 1965. Phoebe Sturm went onto serve in various teaching. coaching and administrative roles, including as women's basketball coach for 21 years, during which she won more than 150 games, and as assistant athletic director at SUNY Plattsburgh. She received recognition as State University of New York Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1987-88. Phoebe Sturm dedicated herself to students and Cardinal Athletics on campus. She was inducted into the Cardinal Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001. Phoebe Sturm earned a stellar reputation as an instructor in golf and fencing, was a course champion at Bluff Point Golf Resort and and devoted time to community service for youth sports development. She served as chairperson of the SUNYAC's women's sports division in 1990 and as president of the SUNYAC in 1993-94.Phoebe Sturm received SUNYAC's Retiree Award in 2000. in 2003 she was the recipient of the Dr. Patrick R. Damore Distinguished Service Award, the conference's highest honor for retirees who made significant contribution to the SUNYAC. As we mark the 52nd anniversary of the passage of the historic federal civil rights law Title IX, we thank Phoebe Sturm for her pioneering leadership, mentorship of female athletes and distinguished service to SUNY Plattsburgh and the greater Plattsburgh community.
