Keeseville Robert L. Lewis, 86, of Keeseville, NY passed away Thursday, March 27, 2014 at Meadowbrook Healthcare in Plattsburgh with his daughter by his side. He was born in New York City on April 23, 1927, the son of the late Richard V. Lewis Jr. and Gertrude (Latham) Lewis. Bob graduated from Hackley School in Tarrytown, NY in 1945. He studied as a seaman at the United States Maritime School in NY during the summer of 1945, and attended Williams College in Williamstown, MA for the Fall 1945 and Spring 1946 semesters. In October 1946 he joined the US Army and served in the 57th Military Police Company in Inchon, Korea until his honorable discharge in March 1948. In May 1948 he met the love of his life, Helen Wood Lewis, on a blind date and they eloped on Friday, August 13, 1948. They were happily married for over 64 years until her death on November 8, 2012. Bob returned to Williams College in the fall of 1948, and graduated in the spring of 1951. After graduation, he went to work for the family business Lewis and Conger in New York City until it was sold. He then worked for The Nestle Corp in White Plains, NY, and was Group Product Manager of Nescafe and Decaf when he gave it all up in the fall of 1967, moving to Keeseville and building his dream home on Augur Lake. He began a new career teaching 7th grade Math at Plattsburgh Middle School, retiring in 1985. Never one to sit idly by, Bob went to work for the US Postal Service as a rural postal carrier, first in Peru and later in Willsboro, until retiring (again) in 1994. He also served for many years as a Fire Commissioner for the Keeseville Fire District, and volunteered in many capacities at the Keeseville United Methodist Church. Bob is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Allyne Lewis Chartier and her husband Maurice Chartier of Keeseville, NY, his grandson Kenneth Joyal and his fiancé Janice Landry and great grandson Dexter Joyal, all of Malone, NY, and his brother Jackson E. Lewis of Southport, NC. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by his sister Anne Lewis Corbin and brother Richard V. Lewis III. In accordance with Bob's wishes, there will be no calling hours. Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made in Bob's name to the Keeseville United Methodist Church, Front Street, Keeseville NY 12944. The Lewis Family would like to thank the staff at Meadowbrook Healthcare, especially on 2 East-Chestnut Grove, for the compassionate and loving care both Bob and Helen received for the past 4 years.
