Roy A. Garrant, of Harbor View, Plattsburgh, NY, passed away on October 26, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on July 14, 1934, to Lenore (Conway) and Roy Garrant. Roy was predeceased by his brother, George (Sylvia) Garrant, who was like a father to him. George affectionately gave him the nickname “Buggs,” a name that stuck with him throughout his life. In 1956, Roy joined the New York State Police, where he proudly served in uniform in Northern New York until being assigned to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) in 1962. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1968 and to Lieutenant in 1976. Notably, in 1969, he served as a clandestine peace officer at Woodstock and was part of the security detail for the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid, where he had the unforgettable experience of witnessing the U.S. vs. Russia hockey game. He retired from the State Police in July 1980. Following his retirement, Roy worked at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals from 1981 until 1987, when he left to join his son, Ron, in the salmon fishing business in Alaska, returning in 1991. He rejoined Wyeth as a Purchasing Manager, retiring in 2003. Roy was an active member of the Association of Former New York State Police, serving as secretary, treasurer, and president. He officiated basketball and football games for 26 years and was a proud 3rd Degree member of Council 255 and a 4th Degree member of Assembly 706 of the Knights of Columbus, where he held positions including Grand Knight, Faithful Navigator, and District Deputy. Roy is survived by his beloved wife, Carol (Dandrow). They were married in 1954 and just celebrated their 70 year anniversary! Their five children: Kevin Garrant (predeceased 1957) Kathy Miller (Calvin), Bob Garrant (Vicky), Ron Garrant (Sheila), and Kelli Poissant (Jon). He also leaves behind nine grandchildren: Jason Miller (Jenn), Ryan Miller (Kendra), Kelly Miller (Elena), Jonathan Miller (deceased, 1980), Bryan Garrant (Laura), Sara, Adam, and Demery (CJ) Garrant, Chris, and Keith Poissant, as well as nine great-grandchildren: Olivia, Jackson, and Aidan Miller, Bella and Warren Miller, Royal Garrant, Amelia Garrant, and Clara and Candela Miller. Roy cherished the time spent with his grandchildren, enjoying sports, boating, vacations, and even sliding down Foxhill at the age of 76! He is also survived by a close niece and nephew, Sandy Lehman and Bob Garrant of Maryland. Roy will be remembered as a devoted husband, the best dad ever, “my hero,” and the best Papa. His family was proud to call him their own, and he will be deeply missed. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday October 31, 2024 at 1:30 pm at St. Peter’s Church. Roy will be inurned at St. Peter’s cemetery. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to a charity of your choice. Arrangements are entrusted to Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh.
