Saranac Mrs. Shirley M. Burdo Carter, 82, of Cold Brook Road in Saranac, passed away Friday, April 20, 2012 at her home. She was born in Youngstown, Ohio on August 21, 1929, the daughter of the late Harry G. and Evelyn (Lambert) Nelson. Shirley attended O.L.V.A. and St. Peter's Schools and was employed at Nelson's Flower Shop for many years. She and her first husband Lindsley Burdo also owned and operated Lins' Grocery Store in Redford. Shirley was a devout parishioner of the Church of the Assumption, was a Eucharistic Minister and was a member of the Saranac Senior Citizens. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, who were the light of her life. Shirley was also an avid reader. She is survived by three daughters and a son in law; Linda and James Heidl of New London, Ohio, Cynthia Burdo of Saranac, Venus Wood of Riverview, a daughter in law; Sally Burdo of Elizabethtown, two brothers and sisters in law; Richard Nelson of Plattsburgh, Edward "Butch" and Shirley Nelson of Peru, Amy Nelson of Cortlandt Manor, N.Y., a sister and brother in law; Jane and Philip Favro of Cadyville, two stepsons and daughters in law; Lloyd H. and Jan Carter, Kenneth L. and Maxine Carter, all of Saranac, a step son in law; Eugene M. Emerick of Hummelstown, Pa., 17 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Her first husband, Lindsley Burdo passed away in 1977 and her second husband Lloyd Carter Sr. passed away in 1998. A son Stephen Burdo, a brother Carl Nelson, a son in law Gary Wood, a step daughter Patricia Emerick, a sister in law; Ruth Nelson, and a great grandson Elijah Moulton also passed away earlier. Calling hours will be held on Monday, April 23, 2012 from 4:00 to 7:00pm at the Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St. in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at 11:00 am at the Church of the Assumption in Redford. Interment will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery in Plattsburgh. Memorial donations may be offered to the Church of the Assumption or the Saranac Rescue Squad.
