Sister Joan Marie Lashway, SCSL, a resident of CVPH-Skilled Nursing Facility in Plattsburgh, NY went to her eternal home on Friday, July 29, 2016. She passed away at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital. Sister Joan, being the third child, was born on October 9, 1937 to Francis LeRoy and Anna Marie (Lussier) Gordon in Plattsburgh, NY. Both her parents, her husband Sheridan Lashway, her 3 brothers Donald Francis LeRoy Gordon, Stanley James Gordon, and Robert James Gordon, predeceased her. She attended elementary and high school in Dannemora, NY and obtained her High School Equivalency Diploma. She was a cook at St. Joseph's Rectory in Dannemora. She obtained a Nurse's Aide Certificate, and a Home Health Aide Certificate for NY and CT. She also obtained a Catholic Home Study Course Certificate, and spent a summer at Loyola Institute of Spiritual Renewal at Regis College, Toronto, Ontario. Later in life, after her husband passed away, she entered the Sisters of Charity of Saint Louis and made her First Profession at St. Joseph's Retreat House in Valatie, NY and her Final Profession on August 25, 1994 at Our Lady of Victory Church in Plattsburgh, NY. Sister Joan Lashway was missioned in Brookfield Center, CT, Our Lady of Victory in Plattsburgh, NY as well as in Clifton Park, NY. Besides being a Nurse's Assistant, Pastoral Assistant, Home Health Aide, and Personal Care Aide, she became a volunteer for Hospice, Gabriel Project, OLV Clothing Store, Apostles for Life, and the Pro Life Movement. Sister Joan remained a Catholic Daughter from Dannemora, and became involved with the OLV Altar Rosary Society. She trimmed cancelled postage stamps for our sisters in Canada who then used them for the missions. She was always ready to offer a helping hand besides having a cheerful and humorous disposition. Sister Joan had many body replacements and since her last hip replacement, which had complications, and having major intestinal surgery as well, she was admitted as a resident to CVPH Skilled Nursing Facility on May 3, 2012. When Sister Joan was somewhat better, she participated with the many activities that were held and also became President of the Resident Council. Sister Joan Lashway is survived by her three children - Mary L. (Lashway) Schilling of Morrisonville, NY, Richard Lashway from Saranac, NY, and Vicky (Lashway)/ John Carter of Chesterfield, Virginia. She is also survived by three grandchildren: Heather Carter, Cole Longtemp, and Michael Rivers, II; her sister-in-law Gloria Gordon, in-laws John and Marianne Lashway as well as eleven nieces and nephews, eight grand nieces and nephews and six great grand nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her Religious Community, the Sisters of Charity of Saint Louis. Calling hours will be on Monday August 1, 2016 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh and also on Tuesday August 2, 2016 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at Our Lady of Victory Church in Plattsburgh, NY a Mass of Christian burial will follow at 10:30 am. The burial will be later in the afternoon at 1:15 pm at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Dannemora, NY. Donations in Sister Joan's memory may be made to Our Lady of Victory Church.
