Sophia G. Katinas

Sophia G. Katinas, 60, of Plattsburgh, NY passed away on Sunday, October 15, 2023 surrounded by love.  The daughter of Tony and Maria (Doxas) Poveda, she was born in Ottawa, Canada on January 16th, 1963.  Sophia’s huge heart and courage touched everyone who knew her.  She will always be remembered for her fun-spirit, her sense of humor, and her infectious smile and laugh.  Sophia’s example of resilience through her battles with mental illness and cancer have served as an inspiration to us all in the fight against these terrible diseases.

Sophia was an accomplished cosmetologist and hair dresser, earning degrees from Austin Beauty School in Albany, NY and Clinton Community College in Plattsburgh.  Her love and joy were her family; enjoying time with her beautiful daughter and grandchildren; and above all, cherishing those meaningful moments with her most-beloved mother.

Sophia was adventurous: she liked new experiences and traveling to different destinations.  She enjoyed cooking, exercising, spending time with dear friends, and every now and then binge-watching a good show on Netflix.

She is predeceased by her Yaya and Papou, Christina and James Doxas.
She is survived by her daughter, Maria McCann (Ricky), grandchildren, Elena, Nicholas, Gavin, Maddox, and Eve, her parents, Tony and Maria, her sisters, Christina (Katinas) Lane and Jill (Beaudin) Poveda, her brother, Michael Poveda, six nieces and nephews, Sophia, Fiona, Tony, Billy, Christina and Olivia, her uncle, George Doxas, and other close, loving Greek relatives across Canada and NY.

Calling hours will be held on Friday October 20, 2023 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday October 21, 2023 at 11:00 am at St. George Greek Orthodox Church
107 Clinton Street, Schenectady, NY 12305, burial will follow at Parkview Cemetery.
