Sophie Pawlowski

d. March 7, 2015

Altona Sophie Marcinkiewicz Pawlowski March 29, 1921- March 7, 2015 A beautiful smile and earthly light was extinguished on March 7, 2015 when our Sophie departed for her heavenly home. We are heartbroken and console ourselves that an angel is now watching over us till we are reunited. Our mother was born in Zynto, Poland on March 29, 1921 to Katarzyna and Leonard Marcinkiewicz. She died peacefully at Meadowbrook Healthcare in Plattsburgh, NY where for almost seven years she communicated and entertained everyone with her radiant smile, her special language and songs. Her young life was interrupted and changed forever. She was imprisoned for years in hard labor, lost an infant son to the Nazi occupation, separated from her infant daughter till war's end and endured six years in refugee camps in Germany. By 1951, the family grew with the birth of two sons and our family immigrated to America settling in Connecticut. Our mother loved her adoptive country, quickly learned English, became a citizen continuing to make life better for her family. She was employed by Eagle Lock/ PennAkron Corp. of Terryville CT and retired from The Torrington Co. prior to moving to Altona, NY to continue her most favorite job- that of Grandmother or Great Babcie, as she was lovingly called. Our Sophie overcame unspeakable hardships yet never surrendered her zest for life, beauty and joy. This was evident by the colorful gardens she kept. She had a gift of making her surroundings more beautiful than when she first arrived anywhere. We are inspired to carry on her gifts. Besides her parents, her husband Roman, infant son Romanik, she is predeceased by brothers Tadeusz, Ludwik, sisters Lola and Stefania all of Poland, and her son in law Gerry Barr of NC.. To carry on her legacy are her children Zocia Barr of Wilmington, NC, Pauline (Todd) Defayette of West Chazy, NY., son Jerzy (Maude) Pawlowski of Altona, NY., Vinnie Pawlowski of Terryville, CT., her beloved grandchildren Edward (Lisa) Steinagle of Schencksville, PA., Michael (Renee) Steinagel of Grand Island, NY., Gregg (Amy) Pawlowski of Keeseville, NY., Scott (Monica) Pawlowski of Jericho, NY., her cherished great grandchildren Jack, Joey, Amanda and Sara, her much loved sister Michelle Laster along with other family still in Zynto, Poland. Our family is grateful to the staff at Meadowbrook Healthcare and Dr. Lacki for their care of our mother and their kindness to our family. Our family will gather at a later date to honor and celebrated our mother's life. Arrangements are entrusted to Brown Funeral Home, 3123 Miner Farm Road, Altona, N.Y. 12910. (518) 236-5986.
