Steve Harstedt passed away peacefully at his home under Hospice care on February 25, 2022, with his loving wife by his side, after a nearly two-year battle with cancer. He was born in Glen Cove, NY and grew up in Melville, NY.
Steve was a graduate of SUNY Plattsburgh (B.A. and B.S.) and SUNY Albany (M.S. in Accounting), acquiring his CPA License in 1994. He touched many lives during his professional career, and will be remembered for both his knowledge and his caring. Teaching was in his nature, and he was fortunate to have the opportunity to be an Adjunct Lecturer in accounting at both Plattsburgh State University Colle and Clinton Community College for several years, as well as conducting housing energy programs for Clinton County Cooperative Extension. Past community activities included serving as a board member and treasurer for the Whiteface Mountain Regional Visitors Bureau and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Clinton County. He was honored to have been selected to serve on the NYS Task Force on the Regulation of Tax Preparers.
Steve and his wife spent many years together traveling and enjoying the outdoor activities that they both loved, but his primary passion was downhill skiing. He was a season passholder at Whiteface Mountain for most of his adult life. The training he received as a Boy Scout deeply influenced him in all aspects of his life, instilling his love of the outdoors, his charitable nature and his ability to relate to others. Always ready to tell a story, most of which were true, he did so whenever possible. His quick, sometimes sarcastic, wit would allow him to tell quite believable yarns as well.
He is survived by his wife, Leona “Lee” Harstedt, mother, Marion, sisters, Karen D’Agostino (Gerald) and Laura Kearns (Michael), brother, Jonathan, nieces, Hazel Harstedt and Elizabeth McNeeley, nephews Nicholas and Peter D’Agostino and Charlie Harstedt, sister-in-law, Jerilyn Rogers (David) as well as loving extended family members.
The family wishes to extend thanks to the many medical staff and friends and neighbors who were there for both Steve and Leona in his final months. Special thanks to Hospice of the North Country for their excellent care, compassion and support. Steve made charitable contributions to many organizations over the course of his life. In lieu of flowers, His family suggests that memorial donations be given to the charitable organization of your choice.
A Celebration of Steve’s life will be held at a later date.
