Susan P Drapeau

May 25, 1944 — February 24, 2021

Susan Drapeau, 76, of Peru, NY passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 as she set out on her journey to be with Glen Drapeau, her loving husband, best friend, and life partner of 45 years.

Susan was born in Haverstraw, NY on May 25, 1944 to Stanley and Carol Adkins and grew up in Plattsburgh, NY and then after the death of her father, in Circleville, OH. She attended Logan Elm High School in Circleville and The Ohio State University. On December 31, 1974, she married her soulmate Glen.

For many years, Susan worked in the insurance industry in Plattsburgh, first as an Allstate agent and later, as the owner of her own agency that represented many insurance companies. Susan sold her agency to Tupper Lake National Bank in 2006 and retired from insurance in 2009. In retirement, Susan was able to spend more time doing the things she loved: hiking the trails of the Adirondacks and Champlain Valley, riding her bicycle, and traveling with Glen to beautiful places across North America, including Jasper National Park in Canada. Susan also enjoyed studying British history and the monarchy, experiencing the works of Shakespeare, Yeats, and Whitman, cheering on her favorite college football and professional basketball teams, exploring Impressionist art at museums in Montreal and Boston, and learning about historic figures and strong women like Eleanor Roosevelt and Susan B. Anthony. After Glen’s death, Susan found new love and companionship with her Bichon Frise, Essie, named after her pioneering grandmother.

Susan is survived by her brother, Charles Adkins (Phyllis) of Columbus, OH, cousins Sandra and Lewis Lafontaine of Plattsburgh, in-laws Joseph Drapeau of West Chazy; Angela LeBel of Concord, NH; Wayne Drapeau of Peru; Jackie Andrews (Patrick) of Peru; Sheila Poindexter of Plattsburgh; and Gloria Drapeau of Plattsburgh, as well as several well-loved nephews and nieces: Brett, Carmen, Lisa, Brandon, Michael, Janelle, Brendan, Shelana, and Nichole. She was predeceased by her parents and beloved husband, Glen.

Per Susan’s wishes there will be no calling hours or services. In lieu of flowers or cards, please remember Susan through contributions to the Salvation Army or the American Cancer Society.
