Terry Schmaltz, 68 of Champlain Drive, Cliff Haven, NY, peacefully passed away on Monday, June 27, 2016 at his home with his wife lovingly at his side. He was born in St. Joe, MI on December 7, 1947 to Henry and Mabel (Ott) Schmaltz, who predeceased him. Terry graduated from Western Michigan University with an engineering degree. He joined the United States Army in 1965. He served his country for 40 years, retiring in 2008 with the rank of Colonel. While Terry was in the Army, he served in the Special Forces and saw action in Bosnia, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom. He married Mary Theresa Pearl in Virginia on February 29, 2012. They moved to Plattsburgh in 2014 and began a new adventure with their purchase of the "Old Stone Barracks", on the former Plattsburgh Air Force base. Over the past couple years, they have worked to restore the Barracks and transform it into the Valcour Brewing Company, something Terry took great pride in. Terry is survived by his wife, Mary Theresa Pearl of Cliff Haven, three daughters: Mary (Brian) Combs of VA, Sharon Schmaltz of CO, and Patricia Schmaltz of VA, five stepchildren: Laura (Brian) Morschauser of VA, Meg (William) Weicher of IL, Kathleen (Paul) Capretta of CA, Greg Frechette of MO, and Tim Frechette of MI, five grandchildren: Maggie, Kate, Harrison, William, and Claire, his brothers: Donald (Carolyn) Schmaltz, and Tom (Sue) Schmaltz all of MI, his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Tim (Laura) Pearl of NH, Dan (Mary Julie) Pearl of IL, John (Trish) Pearl of CT, Kathleen (William) Hughes of FL, Anne (Eric) Jenkins of CO, Margaret (Craig) Mundy of NC, Mike (Susi) Pearl of CA, and several nieces and nephews also survive him. Terry was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His zeal for life was infectious to everyone who met him. To know him was to love him. He was the consummate Soldier with leadership qualities and character that were inspirational to everyone. He felt blessed to combine his passion for history and brewing beer in his founding of the Valcour Brewing Company housed at the Old Stone Barracks, where under his direction a complete renovation was accomplished.
