Thomas M. Hayhurst, 65, a 30-year resident of Plattsburgh, passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2024. He was born in Brooklyn and lived in Rockland County and Westchester County before moving to Plattsburgh. Thomas, known by most people as “Tom”, was an avid and accomplished hiker and proud Adirondack (ADK) 46er. He was committed to sharing his love of the outdoors and trails with his family, friends, and the greater hiking community. This commitment included maintaining and preserving trails throughout the Adirondacks, including a role as the fire tower coordinator for the Friends of Poke-O-Moonshine. Thomas was a devoted husband, a loving father, a proud grandfather, a beloved son, and a caring brother. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Nancy Hayhurst; sons James (Birgit) Hayhurst and Raymond (Emily) Hayhurst; daughter Heather (Steve) Hayhurst; sister Jean (Alan) Fischer; brother Michael (Cheryl) Hayhurst; sister-in-law (Mary); and four grandchildren. Thomas is predeceased by his father Clifford, mother Joan, and brother Clifford Jr. Thomas’ sense of humor, kindness, and passion for the Adirondacks will live on in the hearts and minds of those who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to be made in Thomas’ memory to the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK.org) and the American Heart Association (heart.org) Thank you for your generosity and your blessings for this amazing human.
