Walter W. Frey, 90, of Mooers, NY passed away, Sunday, September 20, 2021, at the UVM-CVPH Medical Center. He was born in Tarrytown, NY, on July 2, 1931, the son of Franz and Theresa (Husslein) Frey.
Walter was long-time fan of Lionel trains. He got his first train set as a young boy, and continued to build his love for the hobby his entire life. An avid photographer, he especially enjoyed taking pictures during vacations and making short movies of family life. Walter loved his grandchildren and could always be found at family gatherings playing with the kids.
Shortly after high school, Walter enlisted in the army during the Korean War. He later studied electrical engineering at Pratt Institute and went on to design advanced radar systems for military bases. His design was small enough for soldiers to bring into the field and be able to see if any enemy troops hiding nearby.
At Brookhaven National Labs, Walter worked on Project Isabel, the lab’s particle accelerator. Walter loved this job and enjoyed working with his colleagues, scientists, and grad students. Walter developed a new design for the magnets, allowing the accelerator to push particles at faster speeds at higher energy. Walter enjoyed his part in helping break new ground in scientific study.
